Program Overview

After careful, detailed research WPS Administration with the support of the Technology Task Force unanimously agree that Wayland High School should move forward with a 1:1 Computer Learning Initiative for the FY13 school year.  This recommendation includes the purchase of a 13" MacBook Air computer for every student in grades 9-12.

Hardware Model:  MacBook Computer

  • Proven with best track record in 1:1 initiatives for last 10 years
  • Ease of use = ease of implementation
  • More time spent on curriculum = less on hardware issues
  • Consistent interface is paramount for teachers, staff and students to implement
  • Provides a solid hardware interface with longer life cycle
  • Fewer risks for virus infections
  • Longer battery life
  • Enhanced applications for rich content creation with iLife Suite
  • Ability to run Windows and MAC OS on same computer
  • Apple Care covers warrantied hardware
Student MacBook computers will be owned by the school and have all related school software installed on them. We are testing the use of VM Ware View to allow students to share and use other needed software applications through our Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI), thus eliminating the need to install curriculum specific software on all student computers. We also encourage the use of cloud-based (web) applications, such as Google Docs, its learning, Prezi, etc.

Students will learn how to manage the computers on their own, allowing students to build technical hardware and software skills. When problems arise that they cannot fix, students and staff will be able to access support at school through a student-run Genius Bar. There will be loaner computers should we need take a computer from a student for repair. Wayland will have staff trained as Apple certified hardware technicians.
